Kamps prides itself on producing a good product - our pallets - and doing so in an environmentally responsible way.
We’ve talked before about common myths about forests and lumber, but it’s important to remember that pallet making doesn’t result in deforestation. The trees that pallet lumber comes from are harvested sustainably. What does that mean? It means that the trees are grown to be harvested. This isn’t lumbering like back in the days when Upper Michigan was logged to rebuild the city of Chicago after the Great Fire. Sustainably harvested forests are managed so that there will be less impact on local lakes and rivers as well as wildlife and their habitat. All of us in the lumber industry count on there being more trees in the future to harvest, so we want to make sure that trees are planted and harvested at complementary rates.
Kamps builds pallets to suit their intended purposes, based on the needs of our clients. Wood pallets can be recycled and reused a number of times. One study found that 70% of wooden pallets are now recycled. When a pallet suffers enough damage that we no longer believe it suitable for use, it is again recycled for another purpose. Some pallets are chipped up to make wood fuel, but Kamps also grinds its old pallets up and makes mulch that will be used in gardens and landscaping. Mulch prevents weeds, helps to maintain moisture in the ground, and slowly biodegrades and becomes part of the environment once again, adding nutrients and body to the soil.
We at Kamps are proud of the quality of our pallets and our customer service, but we are also gratified to make something that is, during every point of its life, useful. Can any other product manufacturer say that?
